Leagues Cup is not a preseason friendly. It is mandatory Liga MX vs MLS crossovers, separate standings and different points when matches go to penalties.
For a Liga MX player, the tournament means flights, altitude changes, different surfaces and fixtures squeezed against the domestic calendar. Fatigue travels with you.
2026 format
36 clubs, 54 phase-one matches: each team plays three mandatory cross-league games. There is a Liga MX table and an MLS table; the top four from each advance.
Special points
Regulation win: 3 points. Draw and penalties: 2 to the shootout winner, 1 to the loser. That forces the competition engine to treat the tournament differently from a normal league.
In your career
Coming back from a long trip and facing Liga MX three days later is not background detail. It affects recovery, focus and squad cohesion.
